Chiefs’ Andy Reid shares thoughts on trading for Justin Fields
The 2025 NFL season didn’t exactly go as planned for the usually dominant Kansas City Chiefs, as the storied franchise flamed out and missed the playoffs while also seeing superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes go down with a season-ending knee injury.
With Mahomes’ timetable for a return to the field being uncertain and needing to bring in some insurance at quarterback even if the superstar can start the 2026 season under center, the Chiefs made a smart move during this offseason to make a trade with the New York Jets to acquire veteran Justin Fields.

Longtime Chiefs head coach Andy Reid recently spoke to Judy Battista and commented about the team bringing in Fields.
“Well, we snuck out and got a good quarterback to back him up,” Reid said when asked if the team’s offseason planning has been for Mahomes to be ready Week 1. “So, if he doesn’t, you know, if he’s not able to make it for the beginning of the season, then we know we’ve got a legitimate backup there that can go win games for us.”
Reid also gave an update on Mahomes, which obviously is the primary concern for the Chiefs moving forward.
“He’s doing great,” Reid told Battista. “He spends a ton of time in the building. … He’s in there for seven hours a day. It’s showing, the progress. Now, to tell you a timeline? I mean, I know what he’s striving for. We’ll just see where it goes from there.”
With Mahomes seemingly determined to be ready for Week 1, it’s safe to assume he’ll be able to do just that, but if he isn’t able to get back under center for the first game of the 2026 campaign, then Fields is a formidable option.
