Colts QB Carson Wentz to miss 5-12 weeks following foot surgery
Earlier this offseason, the Indianapolis Colts shifted the franchise’s direction by acquiring former Pro Bowl quarterback Carson Wentz.
However, the Colts suffered a significant setback after Wentz suffered a foot injury in training camp. According to Mike Wells of ESPN, the 28-year-old will miss the next five to 12 weeks after undergoing foot surgery.
The wide-ranging timetable may push Wentz to miss up to the first two months of the 2021 season. The Colts will likely take the precautionary approach with the injury, given the sensitivity of the area.
However, head coach Frank Reich voiced that he believes Wentz will shoot for the lower end of the spectrum.
“Knowing Carson, I’m optimistic,” Reich said. “Knowing this is the type of injury you don’t have to be pain-free to play in. You have to get to an acceptable level of tolerating pain and then you can start playing. That could happen early.”
It’s too early in the process, but it’s clear the franchise hopes the former Pro Bowler can return in the first couple of weeks of the regular season. The Colts are banking on Wentz recapturing the form that once made him one of the game’s best young quarterbacks.
In the meantime, the Colts will roll with youth under center while he’s on the mend. The team will shuffle through Jacob Eason, Sam Ehlinger, Jalen Morton, and Brett Hundley throughout preseason and training camp.
Among the group, Hundley is the only quarterback to attempt a pass in an NFL game. Time will tell who will get the first crack at the starting job with Wentz sidelined.
