Commanders QB Jayden Daniels Reveals Why He’s ‘Got a Long Way to Go’

As the Washington Commanders gear up for the 2026 season, it marks a pivotal point for quarterback Jayden Daniels as he makes his way back from injury.

However, it’s much more than that for the 25-year-old, as he said he still needs to get a better grasp of the Commanders’ new offensive scheme.

“I’ve still got a long way to go,” Daniels said via ESPN.

It’s a significant change, as it’s the second offensive system he’s worked in since entering the NFL. The team has hired David Blough as the offensive coordinator after parting ways with Kliff Kingsbury.

There is a dynamic shift in the game plan toward more under-center plays rather than more no-huddle opportunities.

The Commanders hope this can lead to a more effective offense while allowing Daniels to prove he’s past the injuries that cut his 2025 campaign short. He played in just four full games and seven overall as he dealt with a sprained knee, dislocated left elbow, and hamstring issues.

Washington was a shadow of the team that reached the NFC Championship Game in his rookie season in 2024, when he earned the NFL Offensive Player of the Year award while guiding the franchise to a 12-5 record.

“I’m done talking about last year,” Daniels said. “Last year is last year; I’m moving on to this season and whatever happened last year, happened last year. It can’t do anything for me; I’ll just continue to get better.”

If the Commanders hope to find sustained success next season, Daniels must lead the charge.
