Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy reacts to Gerald McCoy’s season-ending injury
The Dallas Cowboys are a team with high hopes heading into the 2020 NFL season. America’s Team is stacked on both sides of the football. As a result, it could very well be a major threat in the NFC this year.
Unfortunately, the Cowboys were dealt a severe blow this week. Their defence took a hit with the team learning that veteran defensive tackle Gerald McCoy has suffered a season-ending injury. McCoy went down with a ruptured right quadriceps tendon, which will keep him sidelined for the 2020 campaign and sparking this reaction from new Cowboys head coach, Mike McCarthy, via ESPN.

“I tell you, it makes you sick on a personal level anytime you see a player go through this type of injury. It was an injury that was in the drill work and I can’t tell you just what he has meant to our D-Line just in the short time we’ve been together,” coach Mike McCarthy said Tuesday. “He’s a big personality, obviously an excellent, excellent football player. But I thought he was in good spirits afterward when I saw him and visited with him. He’ll tackle this injury recovery just like he tackled everything else.”
The Cowboys have had a talented defense over the past couple of years. They were hoping to take another step forward this season with McCoy playing a pivotal role in that progress. However, without McCoy, Dallas will struggle to replace his production and leadership.
Despite the fact he’ll be sidelined for the upcoming season, McCoy still intends to be a vocal leader and mentor to his teammates in Dallas.

“I will remain the mentor I am to the young guys and do my part to make sure that this team goes where it needs to,” McCoy said in a text to ESPN’s Ed Werder. “As far as my mindset people deal with real life problems every day especially now with the state of our country.
“There is a lot of pain and heartache taking place right now that all our attention needs to go towards whether it is the pandemic or our fight for social justice. In retrospect what I’m dealing with is minimal compared to that. Therefore this is light work for me. Anybody who knows me knows I love a challenge. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!! I will be back better. LETS GET IT!!”
It’ll be interesting to see whether McCoy’s injury will force the hand of the team’s front office to make a move to address the void on defense. Dallas is hoping to be a contender in the NFC. The need to compete could spark some activity within the team to get back on track defensively.
