Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy’s job is safe for the 2022 campaign

The Dallas Cowboys are a couple of weeks removed from their disappointing wild-card round loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

Since the disappointing postseason exit, there remains uncertainty around McCarthy’s long-term future. According to ESPN, the Cowboys have informed McCarthy that he will return for the 2022 season.

Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy has been told that he will return in 2022, a source confirmed to ESPN’s Ed Werder on Thursday.

The Cowboys are coming off a solid season, winning the NFC East division title while reaching the playoffs for the first time in three years. Dallas held firm control of the NFC East throughout the season, showing flashes of promising potential.

In his first two years, McCarthy holds an 18-15 regular-season record. He’s set to enter the third year of his five-year contract that runs through the 2024 season.

However, their disappointing playoff loss at home against the 49ers angered the fan base. It pushed plenty of the public blame toward McCarthy’s handling of the game, while Dak Prescott received backlash for his late-game decision-making.

Although the Cowboys fell well short of vying for the Super Bowl, the team holds a bright future ahead. The team possesses tremendous talent on both sides of the ball. Their defense was significantly improved, with Micah Parson and Trevon Diggs emerging as star talents.

McCarthy will have plenty of pressure to build off the success to push toward contending for the Super Bowl. Dallas has constructed a balanced roster that should vie for a championship.
