Dolphins are satisfied with landing Tua Tagovailoa at No. 5
In the weeks leading up to the 2020 NFL Draft, there was much talk around the Miami Dolphins attempting to move up to the first overall selection. The Dolphins had put an all-out effort to snag the first overall pick away from the Cincinnati Bengals.
However, the Bengals stayed the course with the selection of former LSU standout quarterback Joe Burrow on Thursday night. The Dolphins also remained in the fifth overall spot, where they “comfortably” snagged former Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. (H/T Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk)
Grier said the Dolphins “talked to everybody,” but they ultimately stayed put and used the fifth overall pick on a quarterback they were linked with long before Burrow was on anyone’s radar screen. Many expected Tua Tagovailoa to be this year’s top choice, but a dislocated hip, other questions about his health, and Burrow’s remarkable 2019 season changed the field.
Before the 2019 season, Tagovailoa had long been pegged as being the top overall prospect in this year’s draft class. However, he suffered a hip injury that drew significant concerns about his long-term future in the NFL. There had been dialogue that the Dolphins would have to move up a few spots to snag Tagovailoa.
Miami now has in place potentially their next franchise quarterback that they can build the offense around. Tagovailoa is entering a situation where he will have the chance to prove he can be the face of an NFL team and help lead them back to prominence.
