Former Saints QB Derek Carr opens up about sudden retirement

The New Orleans Saints will embark on yet another new era at the quarterback position after the sudden retirement announcement by veteran quarterback Derek Carr.

After a somewhat successful stint with the Las Vegas Raiders, Carr was released by the team that drafted him and ended up signing with New Orleans in hopes of resurrecting his NFL career. Although it was promising initially, the Saints ultimately slipped into mediocrity, and Carr ended up injuring his shoulder, which prompted his retirement rather than continuing to play.

Carr recently opened up about his decision to retire in an interview with Front Office Sports.

“I never played just for the money,” he said. “I had a whole bunch of people tell me how crazy I was, and ‘Man, I would never have done that.’ That’s all cool, but I’ve gained all these things that the world has to offer, and it doesn’t really do anything for your heart. I knew my heart was at peace, and that’s really all that mattered.”

Clearly, Carr felt as if he had made enough money in the NFL and was comfortable walking away from the game at 34 years old to spend more time with his family, which is an admirable decision from a player of his age with some football left in him.
