Gerald McCoy warns Panthers about parting ways with Cam Newton
The Carolina Panthers saw yet another season fall well short of reaching the playoffs. Their failed postseason hopes were crushed by a porous season half of the year that put them entirely out of the mix.
That has sent the franchise into a critical offseason of not only looking for a new head coach, but making a serious decision at the quarterback position with Cam Newton’s future with the franchise. In light of that, former Carolina Panthers star defensive tackle Gerald McCoy voiced that it would be foolish for the team to part ways with Newton, according to Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk.
If Newton is healthy, Panthers defensive tackle Gerald McCoy said moving on from Newton would be the “dumbest thing they ever did.â€
“There aren’t a lot of Cam Newtons walking around,†McCoy said, via Jourdan Rodrigue of TheAthletic.com. “In fact, there are no Cam Newtons walking around.â€
Injuries over the last two seasons have hampered Newton, but he has mainly been a reliable option under center. It has been merely his inability to stay healthy that has drawn questions about whether he’s still a long-term piece of the puzzle at this stage of his career.
Newton is about to enter the final year of his five-year, $103.8 million deal, which should either draw questions for a new extension for fuel trade rumors. What the team plans to do at the vacant head coach spot will be very telling of what lies ahead for Newton in Carolina.
