Jaguars QB Nick Foles suffered broken collarbone in Week 1

The Jacksonville Jaguars headed into the 2019 season with much optimism, appearing to finally have a formidable option under center. The outlook was bright with former Super Bowl MVP quarterback Nick Foles in place.

However, all of this hope was quickly deflated as Foles suffered a broken clavicle in the contest that he will undergo surgery to repair on Monday, according to Michael DiRocco of ESPN.

Foles suffered a broken left clavicle when Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones drove him into the ground after Foles released the ball on a 35-yard touchdown pass to DJ Chark. He left the sideline for X-rays and was ruled out of the game shortly after.

This was one of those instances where Foles was tackled cleanly after making a throw with his left shoulder being slammed into the turf. Immediately after it occurred, he was taken to the sideline and back to the locker room for further evaluation.

His absence now pushes rookie Gardner Minshew to the starting job over the next several weeks. Minshew was taken in the sixth round of this year’s draft to be the primary backup to Foles. However, this injury elevates him to a significant role of leading the offense.

In his first NFL action, he completed 22 of 25 passes for 275 yards with two touchdowns. He also had an interception and held a 122.5 passer rating. Although he was facing a stiff challenge against the Chiefs, Minshew held his own showing much poise on Sunday afternoon.

The Jaguars with look to bounce back in Week 2 action on the road against the defending AFC South champion Houston Texans. The Texans will also be looking to bounce back from their opening day defeat. Houston narrowly lost 28 – 30 to the New Orleans Saints on Monday Night Football.
