Jaguars respond to questions on Travis Hunter’s two-way status

Jacksonville Jaguars rookie Travis Hunter will miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery to repair the lateral collateral ligament in his right knee.

It has quickly shifted the focus toward Hunter’s desired status as a two-way player, as head coach Liam Coen voiced that it’s too early to discuss whether he will remain playing on both sides of the ball.

“I understand there’s a lot of questions about if he’ll remain a two-way player and all those kind of things,” Coen said Wednesday morning via ESPN. “All of that is very premature, and at the end of the day, like every player on this roster, he’ll be evaluated at the end of the season, and we’ll be able to give him his three better, three best and the things that we need to continue to improve upon and the things we need to build on.

“But right now our complete focus is on the Chargers and getting a must need to win on Sunday.”

The fact that the Jaguars are going to evaluate whether Hunter will stay in his two-way role at the end of the season presents plenty of doubt. He showed promise in both positions as a wide receiver and cornerback, but there is the inherent increased risk of injury.

Jacksonville doesn’t expect Hunter to be the team’s No.1 wide receiver and cornerback, but rather that it wants him to develop into an effective factor in his role.

Time will tell if the Jaguars will allow him to continue his two-way journey.
