Jacksonville Jaguars Jalen Ramsey wise to take quieter tact this season

The Jacksonville Jaguars are going to be much different this year. At least quieter, anyway. Former All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey is entering his fourth season in the NFL, and he’s typically been brash at every turn. There has been a legion of trash talk when it comes to opposing quarterbacks, ranging from Josh Allen to Matt Ryan.

This offseason, Ramsey publicly stated that the Jaguars aren’t interested in extending his contract at this point. While that has far more to dow tip the pair of years remaining on his rookie deal, it still doesn’t hurt Ramsey to keep a low profile as both he and the Jacksonville Jaguars attempt to bounce back from a painful 2018.

In Ramsey’s case, the 24-year-old is hoping a different attitude — at least publicly — will yield some different results. On Monday, the Florida State product spoke to the media and instead of talking about other quarterback around the league, talked about his own, per NFL.com:

“You want to do this again, huh?” Ramsey responded. “I’m not going to do this again but, we do play some good quarterbacks this year, of course, but probably the quarterback I’m most excited for is Nick Foles. I don’t have to play against him, of course. He is my teammate. He is a great teammate, the few interactions we’ve had has been great. Great man, great player as well. He has nothing to prove to anybody. He’s a Super Bowl champion, Super Bowl MVP. So, I hope he comes out here and he plays free and knows he has the support of everybody.”

If Jacksonville is going to bounce back, it will largely be because of Foles. After spending the last two years with the Philadelphia Eagles, Fole joins a team that has been wading through the abyss for years at his position. David Garrard and Byron Leftwich were middling, which Blake Bortles was downright awful. Looking for some stability at the game’s most important position, Foles enters the fold.

There’s little reason to believe the defense is going to take a step back. Ramsey remains an elite corner in the prime of his career. The loss of Telvin Smith matters, but the addition of first-round edge rusher Josh Allen should be a boon. All told, the offense simply has to be decent, and the Jaguars have a shot of doing something in 2019.
