J.J. McCarthy’s Comments Reveal the Reality of Vikings’ QB Competition
As the Minnesota Vikings move through the offseason, the central focus around the franchise has been the quarterback competition between Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy.
Earlier this week, McCarthy addressed the unique situation, attempting to ease the tension.
“It’s just like two guys in a classroom,” McCarthy said after the team’s second OTA of the spring via ESPN. “He sits on one side, I sit on the other side, and it’s the coach’s responsibility to teach us and coach us.”
The Michigan product was then asked if there was any awkwardness with Murray.
“Awkwardness? It’s just like the same feeling when you’re in high school, and there’s another person on the other side of the room,” McCarthy said. “That’s just kind of how it is. I wouldn’t say there’s any awkwardness.”
As much as McCarthy is trying to smoothly navigate his way through it, it’s clear that he is uncomfortable with Murray’s presence. Since Murray’s arrival, there remains an outside expectation that he will eventually earn the starting job due to his talent and pedigree as a starter throughout his NFL career.
The Vikings brought him in to bring stability to the position, and wouldn’t have done so if they were extremely confident in McCarthy leading the charge.
He notably struggled last season as he finished with a 35.6 quarterback rating in 10 starts, which was the third lowest among NFL quarterbacks with at least 10 starts. However, he did show some improvement over the final four games as he held a 69.8 quarterback rating over that stretch.
All that said, Murray’s approach to the situation remains simple, fitting in and helping where he can.
“Obviously, I know he’s a younger guy, so any way I can help him, obviously I’ll … give him any knowledge that he needs,” Murray said. “We’re both competitors, and I know we both want what’s best for the team.”
Time will tell what direction head coach Kevin O’Connell will move forward at quarterback ahead of the 2026 season.
