Chiefs should make a run at Logan Ryan in NFL free agency

The Kansas City Chiefs don’t have many weaknesses.

After winning the Super Bowl in February, general manager Brett Veach largely kept the team together in free agency, only losing two starters off his championship squad. In the draft, the Chiefs added LSU running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire in the first round before nabbing Mississippi State inside linebacker Willie Gay Jr. in the second.

Still, the secondary has question marks, especially amid news of Bashaud Breeland facing a four-game suspension for violation of the league’s substance abuse policy. This before news of Breeland being arrested on five different charges in South Carolina a week ago.

Enter Logan Ryan.

Ryan was one of the league’s better corners last seasons and provides versatility on lining up both in the slot and outside. Kansas City could primarily use a slot corner — especially once Breeland is back in the picture — after losing Kendall Fuller to the Washington Redskins in free agency. Ryan, 29, starred for the New England Patriots before enjoying a productive stint with the Tennessee Titans over the past three seasons.

However, Ryan is now a free agent looking for his third landing spot. Kansas City makes ample sense for both parties.

For the player, he gets to join a championship team. Ryan already has two Super Bowl rings from his time with the Patriots, but playing for the Chiefs would put him in the proverbial driver’s seat for a third. Kansas City is the odds-on favorite to win Super Bowl LV in most Vegas Sportsbooks, coming in at +650.

As for the team, Ryan brings a veteran presence in the prime of his career. The Chiefs currently have only three corners on the roster with any legitimate experience, including Breeland. Without him, the group consists of Charvarius Ward, second-year man Rashad Fenton and newly-acquired special teamer Antonio Hamilton, coming over from the New York Giants.

Ryan gives Kansas City both a good starter and some versatility on the back end, something it lost when Fuller bolted for the nation’s capital. The Chiefs have to be concerned about their depth at the position, and Ryan would come both highly-recommended and cheap. At this point in the league calendar, it would be shocking to see him sign for more than a one-year deal.

The best matches almost always seem to be scuttled in free agency. If Ryan and the Chiefs know what’s best for them, this one gets done.
