Matthew Stafford’s New Rams Deal Includes One Eye-Popping Detail
After months of speculation, the Los Angeles Rams agreed to a lucrative one-year, $55 million extension with star quarterback Matthew Stafford.
Stafford can earn as much as $60 million if he hits playoff incentives for the 2027 campaign. Before the new deal, he was scheduled to earn $40 million in 2026 with no contract beyond that.
The extension has $5 million in roster bonus, while the remaining $50 million becomes fully guaranteed at the start of the 2027 league year.
Since Stafford announced his return after earning the 2025 MVP award, there hadn’t been any clarity toward his future in Los Angeles beyond 2026. The new contract keeps him in tow for at least the next two seasons as the Rams look to push toward Super Bowl contention.
The 38-year-old is coming off arguably his best campaign that saw him lead the league with 4,707 passing yards with a career-best 46 touchdown passes and 109.2 passer rating that earned him his first career MVP award.

Stafford is still playing at an elite level, which gives the Rams every reason to commit to a new deal with him to maximize their championship window. Even before the contract, Los Angeles has shown commitment to an all-in approach that began with revamping their secondary by trading for All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie, along with signing Jaylen Watson.
The Rams finished last season on the doorstep of reaching the Super Bowl after falling to the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Championship game. With Stafford in tow, Los Angeles is trying to make the most out of it.
