Michael Irvin believes Jerry Jones needs to pay Dak Prescott what he’s earned

The Dallas Cowboys are stuck in the mud with their contract extension talks with star quarterback Dak Prescott.

There hasn’t been any significant progress made toward a new deal that will make him one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the league. With that in mind, Hall of Famer Michael Irvin believes that team owner Jerry Jones has to give Prescott the money he has earned after paying under an inexpensive rookie deal. “Dak has been not great, but perfect. Not necessarily in wins and losses, of course. But I’m talking about just the person that he’s been. The kind of investment you want to make, the kind of guy you say ‘yeah, we hit it with this guy. We got him in the fourth round.’ You stole four years, so whatever he gets he deserves because you still owe him back pay,” Irvin said, via the Dallas Morning News.

There doesn’t appear to be any pushback from the Cowboys to pay Prescott, it’s more on the number of years that they want to commit to him. Dallas reportedly wants to ink him to a five-year contract while the 26-year-old wants a four-year deal.

There is still time before the July 15 deadline, but it’s a date that continues to creep closer the longer that these contract talks linger. Prescott has yet to ink his franchise tender for the 2020 season, which has further sent home the point that he’s hoping to avoid this same situation cropping up again next offseason.
