NFL Combine: Rumors and notes
The NFL Combine had its second day of on-field drills and workouts, and it was the one we’ve been waiting for. The quarterbacks, wide receivers and tight ends took to the gridiron inside Lucas Oil Stadium at Indianapolis, and the results were interesting.
Baker Mayfield, Josh Allen, Josh Rosen and Lamar Jackson all threw, while Sam Darnold did all of the drills that didn’t involve slinging it (he’s waiting for his USC Pro Day). Jackson was erratic at times with his accuracy, something that has to be a concern. We all know about the athletic tools, the intelligence and the arm strength, but at 57 percent for his college career at Louisville, his accuracy will be picked at.
Rosen had a solid day save for a few bad throws on slants. The ball is effortless coming out of his hand and he certainly has the tape to suggest a top-five pick. While he wasn’t great on Saturday morning, he didn’t do anything to hurt himself.
The same could be said for Baker Mayfield. Mayfield’s biggest hurdle this weekend was getting through the interviews without hurting his stock, and so far, so good. The hot rumor coming out of Indianapolis is that the Miami Dolphins and head coach Adam Gase would love to see Mayfield on South Beach in a few months.
As for Allen, it was a day to show off the cannon and some improved mechanics. The Wyoming star has been wildly inconsistent with ball placement throughout his time in college, hitting on only 56.2 percent of his throws. Without the huge arm, he’s nowhere near being a first-round pick, but the cannon exists, and so does the hype.
Elsewhere, we might have seen the stock of Alabama Crimson Tide wide receiver Calvin Ridley take a big hit. Ridley looked good catching the ball and running routes (you would think this would be enough to convince teams he’s going to be good, considering his tape in the SEC), but his measurables were poor. In the broad jump, Ridley only went for nine feet and two inches on the broad jump, a terrible number for his position.
All that said, the 40-time was good at 4.41, so it must be weighed alongside his tape, but against the broad jump and his age (24).
The combine is all but finished after Sunday, with the big names headed back to their respective campuses and/or training centers.
