NFL Draft reaction: Quick observations
The NFL Draft is over, and there is plenty to talk about. Hell, if we all had enough time, all 32 teams could have a couple thousand words written about them.
But, because nobody has that kind of down time, we’ll stick to some of the main talking points.
- The Arizona Cardinals should be thrilled about getting Josh Rosen. Arizona was able to land Rosen at 10th-overall, the fourth quarterback off the board. The former UCLA star has a ton of upside and with David Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald and Christian Kirk around him. Arizona has a bright future.
- The Green Bay Packers should be absolutely thrilled with their haul. While the entire class offers some significant upside, the first two picks have a chance to be special. Both Jaire Alexander and Josh Jackson are top-notch corners who should start right away in Green Bay’s secondary. With Aaron Rodgers now 34 years old, time is of the essence, and this class will go a long way toward keeping that Super Bowl window open.
- John Elway has not drafted a Pro Bowl player (that went to the game with the Denver Broncos) since landing Von Miller in 2011, but that might finally change after this class. Bradley Chubb somehow fell to Denver at No. 5, and then Elway kept the good times rolling with both Courtland Sutton and Royce Freeman on the second day. Add in the Day 3 pick of DaeSean Hamilton, and the Broncos have to be very happy.
- For years, the Kansas City Chiefs have been getting mauled up front, with teams running all over their soft front seven. General manager Brett Veach tried to change all that over the weekend, landing quality help in EDGE rusher Breeland Speaks, nose tackle Derrick Nnadi and hybrid linebacker/safety Dorian O’Daniel. If the Chiefs wanted to beef up the front, they succeeded in fine fashion.
- The Atlanta Falcons clearly want to get back to having the league’s best offense. Instead of adding a guard or beefing up with a defensive tackle, general manager Thomas Dimitroff decided to give Mohamed Sanu and Julio Jones another running mate, this time in Calvin Ridley. Ridley, 23, is a mature prospect who can fly with sub 4.4 speed.
- The luckiest team in the draft? The New York Jets. New York traded up to the third spot and would have been between a rock and a hard place had Sam Darnold gone to the New York Giants only a pick before. Instead, the Jets end up getting Darnold, who might prove to be the most impactful quarterback in the class.
