NFL Playoffs have fantastic Championship Sunday on tap
The NFL couldn’t have scripted a better final four. The NFL playoffs 2019 are set to be fantastic spectacles on paper. Come Sunday, the top two seeds in each conference will square off against each other. The New Orleans Saints host the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC. That matchup is followed by the New England Patriots visiting the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC contest.
Both games are rematches from the regular season, both of which were high-octane, high-scoring affairs. New England and Kansas City played a thriller back in Week 6 on Sunday Night Football at Foxborough. The Patriots won 43-40 on a last-second field goal from Stephen Gostkowski. This time around, though, the Chiefs will have Justin Houston in their lineup. Meanwhile, the Patriots will be without receiver Josh Gordon. It will be a challenge for either side to progress from the NFL playoffs.

In Week 9, it was the Saints outlasting the Rams in a 45-35 tilt at the Superdome. For Los Angeles, it was its first loss of the season, while New Orleans was able to spring board off that victory to earn the top seed in the NFC. Afterwards, there was verbal sparring between Saints coach Sean Payton and Rams cornerback Marcus Peters, with Peters having been torched by Michael Thomas for more than 200 yards. It’ll be fascinating to see how Peters and Thomas match up this go-around.
Regardless of who wins and loses come Sunday afternoon and evening, the NFL is hitting the proverbial home run. This time last year, there was plenty of worry about the potential quarterback play in the Super Bowl, with the final four consisting of Tom Brady, Blake Bortles, Nick Foles and Case Keenum. This time around, Brady is the only repeat with Patrick Mahomes, Drew Brees and Jared Goff joining him in that group.

Simply put, four of the league’s best offenses will be led by two surefire Hall of Famers, the likely MVP, and another top-end youngster in Goff. The defenses are certainly a bit lower on the marquee, but even there, you can find a Defensive Player of the Year in Aaron Donald and All-Pros in Chris Jones and Stephon Gilmore.
No matter how it al shakes out, the Super Bowl is going to be both widely anticipated and evenly matched. It’s hard to envision a scenario where any team is favored by more than four points over the other. For a league that always talks about its love of parity, it’s getting that in its showcase week of the season.
After months of fighting for the Lombardi Trophy, only four teams remain in the hunt. The NFL has to be thrilled about each of the participants.
