NFL power rankings: Top 5 head coaches entering 2021
In the latest NFL power rankings, we break down the top five current head coaches going into the 2021 season.
5. Sean Payton, New Orleans Saints
Payton has been exceptional throughout his time with the Saints, winning a Super Bowl and being on the doorstep a litany of other occasions, most notably in 2018. Now, with legendary quarterback Drew Brees retiring, Payton will be coaching his first season with a new man under center. The choice is between Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston, a decision which will perhaps not only shape this campaign but the years to come for the veteran head coach.

4. John Harbaugh, Baltimore Ravens
Harbaugh is criminally underrated both by national media and fans alike for the job he has done with the Ravens. Since taking over in 2008, Baltimore has been a contender almost every year, including winning it all in 2012. The last three seasons with quarterback Lamar Jackson have been fruitful if not ultimately disappointing, resulting in two AFC North titles and a trio of postseason appearances. If the Ravens can win another title this year, Harbaugh will eventually get Hall of Fame consideration.
3. Mike Tomlin, Pittsburgh Steelers
Tomlin became the Steelers head coach in 2007. They are yet to have a losing season under him, and we’re entering the 2021 campaign. Mind-boggling. Tomlin has already won a Super Bowl and been to another, although those were long ago (2007, 2010). If Ben Roethlisberger can turn back time and play like a Pro Bowler, look for Tomlin to extract every ounce of potential from Pittsburgh. Even with a team somewhat in a rebuilding phase, the Steelers will always be competitive because of their great coach.

2. Andy Reid, Kansas City Chiefs
Reid was always a very good coach with the Philadelphia Eagles, but he’s gone up another level in Kansas City. Since Reid’s arrival in 2013, the Chiefs have only missed the playoffs once while winning each of the past five AFC West titles. In the past two seasons, Kansas City has won the AFC, and in 2019, won it all. The Chiefs are loaded for another title run, only padding the resume of a coach who will certainly be in the Hall of Fame after he retires.
1. Bill Belichick, New England Patriots
This was an easy choice, and how could it not be? While Reid and even Tomlin deserve consideration, Belichick’s accomplishments dwarf almost everyone to ever stand on an NFL sideline. He has six Super Bowl rings in his role with New England and since 2001, has missed the playoffs twice. The Patriots have been the gold standard for two decades and after a busy offseason, figure to be in the postseason mix again.
