Packers hoping to get fans back in Lambeau Field sooner rather than later
Throughout the last few months, there has been a growing concern over the spread of the coronavirus. It has impacted all walks of life, with professional sports being no different.
The NFL has continued to track a precautionary route in hopes of getting the 2020 season underway as planned. With that in mind, the Green Bay Packers have announced that there will be no fans allowed at their practices or preseason home games. (H/T Darin Gantt of Pro Football Talk)
“The tremendous support of cheering fans at Lambeau Field motivates all of us in the Packers organization,” Packers president Mark Murphy said in a statement. “But after consulting with local health officials and reviewing League and CDC guidelines, we felt we needed to make this difficult decision. We will miss seeing so many of our fans, particularly the young ones, during this exciting time of year. We will continue to work on the protocols and logistics in the hope that we can welcome fans back to Lambeau Field for the regular season without jeopardizing the health of our players, team personnel and fans.”
That shouldn’t come as much of a surprise as the first preseason games have already been canceled. Meanwhile, the NFL has already voiced that tarps will cover the first six to eight seats at regular-season games.
The NFL should be prepared for the scenario of no fans in attendance like the MLB and NBA have already moved forward with that notion. It’s only a matter of time before they have to go the same route.
