Panthers remain mum on Cam Newton’s future in Carolina
Throughout much of the 2019 season, there were plenty of questions regarding star quarterback Cam Newton’s status with the Carolina Panthers.
That has bled into the offseason as he’s set to enter the final year of his five-year, $103.8 million deal. The Panthers haven’t been public about their long-term plans with Newton as general manager Marty Hurney was quite vague about him in a recent interview with Steve Reed of the Associated Press. “He’s rehabbing; that’s all I can say,” Panthers General Manager Marty Hurney.
Even before the Panthers made a head coaching change from Ron Rivera to former Baylor frontman Matt Rhule, there was some significant chatter that Newton had played his final game with the franchise. It has been hard for the team to depend on him as he has dealt with injuries in the last two seasons.
That has significantly limited his availability, which has impacted Carolina to miss the playoffs in each campaign. Newton has been a cornerstone of the franchise throughout his career. Still, the way his contract is situated, along with his injuries and inconsistent play, could see them move in another direction.
There is still much that could change over the offseason, but it doesn’t sound like the team is fully committed to Newton. The star quarterback did state in a few interviews during the week leading up to the Super Bowl that he wanted to remain with the franchise. Only time will tell how things will unfold.
