Patriots head coach Bill Belichick sends stern message about team’s plans
The New England Patriots are looking to turn the page in 2023 after missing the playoffs for the second time in the last three years.
Much of the focus lies on head coach Bill Belichick leading the franchise back in the right direction. The future Hall of Fame head coach voiced last his previous championship success in his 23 years at the helm in New England doesn’t factor into his game plan moving ahead.
“We’re not resting on our past laurels; that’s not the message to the team or the fans,” Belichick told the Boston Globe at Louisiana State’s pro day. “We have never operated that way and aren’t now.”

As much as Belichick has attempted to push the franchise forward out of Tom Brady’s shadow, it’s a perception he’s been unable to avoid. It’s become a bigger outside discussion, especially with the organization headed in the opposite direction since Brady’s departure.
The Patriots reached the playoffs in 2021, but now there are serious questions concerning whether Mac Jones is the long-term answer under center. Jones struggled last season with his health and his performance.

Meanwhile, Belichick hasn’t outright publicly supportive of the Alabama product as the franchise cornerstone. All that push forth what may be a make-or-break campaign for Jones that could see the team quickly shift in another direction if he struggles again or fails to progress in his development.
Belichick isn’t a stranger to pressure, but the Patriots are at a potential tipping point that will see things unfold in one of two directions in 2023.
