Las Vegas Raiders should sign Richard Sherman in NFL free agency
The Las Vegas Raiders need defensive help, and signing corner Richard Sherman would be a wise way of doing so.
If the Las Vegas Raiders want to reach the postseason for only the second time since 2002, time to fix the defense. Enter Richard Sherman.
Sherman, 33, is still sitting on the market in NFL free agency. The future Hall of Famer has both talent and experience to bring to a team in desperate need of both. And while, the Raiders don’t have a ton of cap space to play with, they have enough to sign Sherman on a one-year deal before reevaluating the fit next offseason.

For Sherman, the fit makes sense as well. Over his first two years in the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks, he played under defensive coordinator Gus Bradley. Bradley, now entering his first campaign in the same role with the Raiders, could use another corner on the outside to compete with second-year man Damon Arnette, whole veteran Casey Hayward holds down the other side.
Bradley comes to Las Vegas as a coach who has long run Cover 3 as his primary way of defending. Sherman has played in such a way throughout his career, and while the Raiders aren’t going to win a title this year, it would still be an interesting landing spot for the veteran.
If the Raiders are going to compete in the AFC West, it starts on the defensive side of the ball. Las Vegas has an offense led by quarterback Derek Carr, running back Josh Jacobs and tight end Darren Waller, but the defense remains one of the most suspect in the game. Barring a huge jump from a litany of players, it appears to be a unit which will rank bottom-third in the NFL. Therefore, a vet such as Sherman coming in to stabilize one position group would be of enormous importance.

Being real, Las Vegas isn’t going to threaten in the division while the Kansas City Chiefs remain as they are. However, the Raiders could fight for second place alongside the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers, but only if some late offseason moves are made by general manager Mike Mayock and head coach Jon Gruden.
If the Raiders see everything the same way, Sherman should be among the first calls made in the coming weeks.
