Rex Ryan sends warning to Aaron Rodgers if he gets Jets job

As the New York Jets move their head coach search, Rex Ryan is convinced that he holds a legit shot at landing the gig.

If Ryan is hired, he plans to put forth some significant changes if star quarterback Aaron Rodgers returns for the 2025 season.

“Clearly, when you have a guy that doesn’t show up for mandatory minicamp — and, by the way, he’s your quarterback, coming off an injury — I think that’s an absolutely ridiculous message you send to the team,” Ryan said during a spot on the “DiPietro & Rothenberg Show” via ESPN.

“If he comes back, things would be different. If he’s back, it ain’t gonna be the country club, show up whenever the hell you want to show up. That ain’t gonna happen. I’ll just leave it at that,” Ryan said.

Beyond the Jets’ struggles on the field, much chatter remained around Rodgers’ massive influence over the franchise. It has led to lingering uncertainty around whether the four-time league MVP will return, retire, or play elsewhere in 2025.

Regardless of who New York hires as the next head coach, Rodgers will factor in greatly to that decision. The Jets are looking for a long-term solution at the helm well beyond the Hall of Fame quarterback’s tenure.

Ryan had a six-year stint with the Jets that featured two AFC Championship Game trips in his first two seasons. However, New York struggled over his final four years. He held a 46-50 regular-season record and a 4-2 playoff mark.
