Sean Payton Opens Up About What Made Broncos Extension Feel Different

The Denver Broncos locked in head coach Sean Payton for the long haul with a five-year extension that keeps him under contract through the 2030 season.

Payton was in the fourth year of his six-year deal, which coincides with general manager Paton inking a five-year deal that also put him under contract through 2030.

The 62-year-old voiced that it was a logical decision to sign an extension with Denver.

“It makes all the sense in the world, I’m super appreciative of that opportunity,” Payton said after Thursday’s OTA practice via ESPN. “… That triangle of ownership, the Walton-Penner group, Greg and Carrie [Penner], working with George, I’ve been spoiled because I had a real good experience in New Orleans … to go two-for-two in that is hard in our league … I’m thankful they want me back.”

In his first three seasons with the Broncos, he holds a 32-19 record, including a tie for the league’s best record last year, which saw them reach the AFC Championship Game, falling short 10-7 to the New England Patriots in large part due to quarterback Bo Nix sitting out due to a fractured right ankle.

Denver holds a bright future ahead, with Nix and Payton secured together for the foreseeable future.

“Sean Payton has led an impressive turnaround over the past three seasons, instilling a winning culture with high expectations,” Broncos owner/CEO Greg Penner said in a statement. “I appreciate the close partnership he shares with George Paton, along with the alignment and stability across our football operations. We’re thrilled for Sean to continue leading our team as head coach, building on our progress during such an exciting time for the Broncos.”

The Broncos are set to open the 2026 season against the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football.
