Texans bring in a veteran QB to backup Deshaun Watson in AJ McCarron
The Houston Texans are coming off their second straight AFC South division title, which has put the team in the position to add more talent to their roster.
The Texans have done that with the addition of veteran quarterback AJ McCarron as potentially the primary backup to second-year Deshaun Watson, according to ESPN.
The Houston Texans on Tuesday signed AJ McCarron to be the team’s backup quarterback behind Deshaun Watson.
The deal is for one year and $3 million, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter, confirming an NFL Network report.
McCarron began last year with the Buffalo Bills after signing with the team in free agency. However, he lost out on vying for the starting job after suffering a shoulder injury. He was released by the team and picked up by the Oakland Raiders, where he made two appearances where he completed 1-of-3 passes for eight yards.
He has spent the first four years in the league as the primary backup to Andy Dalton. McCarron had played sparingly with the Bengals throughout his tenure and had hoped to get a shot to start with the Bills, but that never came to fruition.
He will now join the Texans where will be an upgrade at the spot that was previously held by Brandon Weeden and Joe Webb. If anything, his presence gives Houston much-needed stability at the position, especially with Watson having previously suffered a torn ACL during his rookie campaign.
The Texans mark the fourth team that he has played with in his career.
