Veteran wide receiver Jordy Nelson retires with the Packers
Following 11 seasons in the league, former Pro Bowl wide receiver Jordy Nelson has decided to step away from the game inking a one-day contract to end his career with the Green Bay Packers.
It’s a move that brings things full circle for Nelson having spent the first 10 years in the NFL with the franchise. With that in mind, the decision from the team to let him go prior to this last year with the Oakland Raiders was something that impacted him, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.
“I think the hurt part was, to be honest, was the unwillingness to try to make it work,” Nelson said shortly after he was released. “But then again, it’s a business, and they have to do what they think is best. What they need to do is to be able to move forward and prepare for the future of the Packers. But I think that was just part of it, but that’s the way it is. I’m definitely not the only one that’s been cut or released when you don’t think it’s going to happen, and it’s not what you want to hear when you go into a meeting with them. But we’ve moved on.”
Nelson established himself as a core piece of the puzzle during his tenure with the Packers, which included helping the team win a Super Bowl. However, his production dipped in his final season with the team, which it should be noted that the team didn’t have Aaron Rodgers for much of that year due to another fractured collarbone.
Nonetheless, it appears any ill will has passed as he has great admiration for the franchise. He ranks fifth with 7,848 receiving yards, third with 550 receptions, and second with 69 touchdowns.
