Vikings bring back veteran QB Carson Wentz

After a disappointing 2025 NFL season, the Minnesota Vikings have decided to shake things up ahead of the 2026 campaign when it comes to the quarterback position, as it seems as though the team isn’t fully confident in J.J. McCarthy to be the face of the franchise moving forward.

As a result, the team recently signed former No. 1 overall pick Kyler Murray, formerly of the Arizona Cardinals, and has now brought back veteran gunslinger Carson Wentz, according to Kevin Seifert of ESPN.

The Minnesota Vikings agreed to terms with quarterback Carson Wentz on a one-year deal Thursday, adding to their depth in a key year for them at the position.

Minnesota seems to have an uncertain future heading into 2026, but are willing to try some things with Murray more than likely being the starter and McCarthy possibly battling with Wentz and Max Brosmer for the backup role.

Wentz, who started five games last season as the Vikings’ backup, joins a group that includes newcomer Kyler Murray along with incumbents J.J. McCarthy and Max Brosmer. The Vikings have been determined to upgrade the position after injuries and poor performances were largely responsible for them missing the playoffs in 2023 and 2025.

Only time will tell how things pan out for the Vikings, as the team doesn’t appear to want to waste any time on developing McCarthy as a starter right away.

There’s no doubt that there will be a quarterback controversy in Minnesota, as it will almost certainly be the main topic of conversation throughout the 2026 NFL season unless Murray resurrects his career early in the season.
