Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy reacts to impressive win over Lions
The Minnesota Vikings got back on the right track in Week 9 action with second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy leading the way for a 27-24 road win over the Detroit Lions.
In his first game back after missing the last seven weeks due to a high right ankle sprain, McCarthy passed for a pair of touchdowns, along with a rushing touchdown, to edge out the Lions.
It was a performance that was a long time coming for the Michigan product, who has struggled to stay on the field in his first two NFL seasons.
“It was awesome,” McCarthy said via ESPN. “Just when you’re hurt, being on IR last year and being out for five [games in 2025], it absolutely kills me not being out there with those guys because I love every single one of them, and I know they got my back and I got theirs the rest of the way.”
Detroit was the heavy favorite, but McCarthy and the Vikings led through much of the contest. The Lions inched their way back to within a field goal with a touchdown with just under two minutes left in regulation.

However, the Vikings closed out the game with McCarthy converting a third and five with a 16-yard pass to receiver Jaylen Nailor to secure the victory.
Minnesota sits at a 4-4 mark to keep the ball rolling against the surging Baltimore Ravens, who have won their last two straight games and have two-time league MVP Lamar Jackson back in the fold.
