Padres Get Payback for No-Hitter, Brewers Snap Losing Streak Against the Diamondbacks

After seeing a no-hitter on Saturday, it was a different story for the San Francisco Giants (43-51) on Sunday as the San Diego Padres (42-54) defeated them with 12 hits for a 10-1 win.

Can you say payback for the Padres?

Pitching was the difference maker with Giants lefty Barry Zito (4-7). In his three innings on the mound, he gave up four runs, four hits, two walks and zero strikeouts. This also included giving up three home runs. He fell to 0-6 (9.89 ERA) when pitching on the road over his last eight starts.

Zito said of the outing via the Associated Press, “My concentration wasn’t where it should be. I threw too many pitches on the middle of the plate. The three homers is an indication of that. When I’m at my best, I’m really pitch to pitch and I think sometimes when I scuffle it’s because I’m just getting out of the moment.”

The Padres had an all-team effort for the win with four home runs dominating the game. Carlos Quentin hit one of them while also driving in three runs. From his three hits, Nick Hundley added one as well as Chris Denorfia and Will Venable.

According to ESPN Stats, the Padres haven’t had a four home-run game on their home field since July 17, 2010 against the Arizona Diamondbacks (50-45).

In his six innings on the mound, Padres lefty Eric Stults (8-7) gave up one run, five hits, five strikeouts and two walks.

Sunday’s game ended a four-game series between the two with San Francisco winning three of them. As they enter the All-Star Break, they are 6 1/2 games behind the Diamondbacks. After the break, the team will try to move up in the division and get a race going by opening up with a homestand of nine games beginning with Arizona, the Cincinnati Reds (53-42) and the Chicago Cubs (42-51).

For the Giants, they sit at +3300 to win this year’s World Series.

The team will send catcher Buster Posey, second baseman Marco Scutaro, lefty Madison Bumgarner and righty Sergio Romo to the All-Star game.

As for the Padres, they still sit at the bottom of the division (8.5 games back). They have only won four of their last 20 games and for this year’s World Series, they are +10000 to win it.

Shortstop Everth Cabrera is the team’s sole representative at the All-Star game.

Brewers defeat the Diamondbacks, 5-1

As they played their last game before the All-Star Break, the Milwaukee Brewers (38-56) ended a four-game losing streak with 5-1 win over the Diamondbacks.

The victory came on solid pitching by Brewers righty Wily Peralta (7-9). Until the fifth inning, he advanced his scoreless streak at 19 1/3 innings until Miguel Montero hit his eighth home run of the season.

In his outing, Peralta gave up a run, seven hits and eight strikeouts.

The Diamondbacks couldn’t say the same about their pitcher. Righty Ian Kennedy (3-6) had a rough outing with four runs coming over the first and second innings.

For the Brewers, Logan Schaefer homered in the fifth inning and also drove in two runs for the game.

In the four-game series, the Diamondbacks took three wins. They’ll enter the break at the top of the NL West with the Los Angeles Dodgers  (47-47) just 2.5 games behind them. Earlier in the week, the Dodgers swept them in a three-game series.

Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said of his team via the Associated Press, “We are in first place. We had a lot of trial and tribulations, but the team has hung in there well. We have stuck together well.”

The team will send first baseman Paul Goldschmidt and lefty Patrick Corbin to the All-Star game.

They sit at +2000 to win this year’s World Series.
