Six ACC Teams Close to qualifying for Bowl Games

The ACC last season had six teams participate in postseason bowl games. After this weekend, the conference could already have six teams that are bowl-eligible for the season, if both Duke and Maryland can both win their sixth games of the season.

Virginia Tech, Miami, Clemson and Florida State have all secured their eligibility to the bowl season having all won at least six games this season.

ACC Bits and Pieces

Andre Williams the tailback for Boston College needs only 162 more yards rushing to become the first back for BC since Montel Harris to rush for 1,000 yards. Williams is currently on a pace to finish with close to 1,700 yards on the ground.

Clemson allowed more points to a visiting team last week in the history of Death Valley. This week the Tigers head to Maryland. Clemson has won six straight road games.

Duke’s dual attack at quarterback is putting up impressive numbers. Last week the team won 35-22 against Virginia. Brandon Connette has two game-winning touchdown passes in the fourth quarter this season, which is a new Duke record. Anthony Boone became only the second quarterback at Duke to win all of his first five starts.

Florida State forced Clemson into four turnovers in last week’s rout. It was the first time the Seminoles defense has done that since 2011. Florida State is plus-7 in turnovers this season, which is no. 12 in the nation in that category.

Georgia Tech destroyed Syracuse last week 56-0. It was the second shutout for the Yellow Jackets this season. Not since 1985 has the football program had two shutouts in the same season.

C.J. Brown and Caleb Rowe threw for a combined 344 yards in Maryland’s loss to Wake Forest 34-10 last weekend. No Maryland team has scored fewer points while throwing for more than 300 yards in a game since 2010.

Miami’s Clive Walford has only 13 catches this season, but nine have converted third downs to first down and two have been for a touchdown.

The Wolfpack of North Carolina State is a big underdog today to Florida State. However, since 2002 the Wolfpack has played Florida State seven times when the Seminoles were ranked and is 5-2 SU. However, NC State is 0-4 SU when playing against an unranked Seminoles team.

North Carolina’s Eric Ebron, the team’s talented tight end, had eight catches last week for 199 yards, which is the most for a tight end in the history of the Tar Heels football program.

Pittsburgh’s Devin Streets is ranked No. 10 in the country and No. 1 in the ACC in yards per catch at 21.1.

Virginia’s offense is coming around after only gaining 709 yards on offense and averaging 11 points a game in its first three games versus opponents from the FBS. The Cavaliers have accumulated over 1,250 yards in their past three games and are averaging over 25 points per game during that stretch.

Virginia Tech has 27 sacks on defense which is the tied for first in the nation. The defense also has 13 interceptions, which is No. 3 in the nation.

Wake Forest ran the ball 24 times last week against Maryland for only 47 yards. However, they won 34-10.
