Source: Manny Machado Reaches Deal for $300 Million with Padres
Major League Baseball sources have said that Manny Machado and the San Diego Padres have agreed to a deal that would be the biggest ever free agent contract in U.S. sports history. The deal is said to be for 10 years at $300 million.
Manny Machado, has been an All-Star four times and a Gold Glove winner twice at third base. He earned $16 million last season between playing for the Baltimore Orioles and Los Angeles Dodgers.
The new deal with San Diego, which is only pending Machado’s physical, includes an opt-out following the fifth season. As well as that, it includes a no-trade clause with limits, said sources. Those sources added that the deal is expected to be announced officially by the Padres on Thursday or Friday.

San Diego, which has not reached the postseason for 12 straight seasons, was 28th last season in the majors. The team had an average of 3.8 runs scored per game.
When the deal is signed, it will be the second largest ever for total value behind just the $325 million extension Giancarlo Stanton signed during the 2014-15 offseason with the Miami Marlins.
Over the last two seasons San Diego has spent over $474 million in free agent signings that is tops in MLB. The Padres, over the prior 25 seasons, had spent a total of $309 million in free agent signings, which is 27th in MLB.
The imminent signing of Machado by the Padres dropped San Diego’s odds to win the National League West to 12 to 1 from 30 to 1 and their World Series odds for 2019 to 50 to 1 from 80 to 1 on several sportsbooks.
