Sources: Ryan Fitzpatrick Agrees to Deal with Dolphins
NFL sources have revealed that quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has agreed to a two-year deal to play with the Miami Dolphins. The deal is worth $11 million and could be worth as much as $17 million to $20 million with the incentives it includes.
Fitzpatrick could take over the starting quarterback position that became available when Miami traded Ryan Tannehill on Friday to Tennessee.
Before the signing of Fitzpatrick, the Dolphins had only a pair of quarterbacks on the roster: Luke Falk and Jake Rudock. Both have never started a regular season NFL game and the two have combined to throw five passes in their NFL careers.
Miami is also expected to continue looking for a franchise quarterback in the draft this year or next.
Fitzpatrick, who is 36, played in place of suspended starter Jameis Winston the first three weeks of the NFL season in 2018 and led Tampa Bay to upset victories over New Orleans and Philadelphia.
In the process, he became the first ever quarterback to throw for 400 or more yards in three straight games and led the NFL over the first three weeks with 1,230 yards passing.
Fitzpatrick replaced Winston again during the season when the Buccaneers star quarterback was sent to the bench.
In all, Fitzpatrick played in eight games with seven starts and threw 17 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while completing 66.8% of his passes, which is the highest completion rate he has had while in the NFL.
The greatest issue Fitzpatrick has is consistency over a long stretch as he struggled with throwing interceptions when he became a starter with the Bucs under coach Dirk Koetter.
Fitzpatrick has also quarterbacked for the Bengal, Bills, Jets, Rams, Titans and Texans and has career passing yards of 29,357 with 190 TDs and 148 interceptions over 141 games.
