Warriors’ Klay Thompson to undergo surgery to repair torn ACL

Kelley L Cox/USA TODAY Sports

Mychal Thompson, the father of Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson, says his son will undergo surgery to repair his torn ACL “as soon as possible,” according to Connor Letourneau of The San Francisco Chronicle.

Thompson suffered the injury during the third quarter of Game 6 of the NBA Finals on Thursday night after landing awkwardly following a foul from Toronto Raptors guard Danny Green. He stayed in the game and made both of his free throws, but he then came out.

He was on his way to a masterful performance, as he had scored 30 points while going 8-of-12 from the floor and burying four three-pointers before exiting.

The 29-year-old played in 78 games during the regular season, averaging 21.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.1 steals over 34 minutes per game while shooting 46.7 percent from the floor, 40.2 percent from three-point range and 81.6 percent from the free-throw line in what was actually a down year for the five-time All-Star.

Thompson, who played his collegiate basketball at Washington State, was originally selected by the Warriors in the first round (11th pick overall) of the 2011 NBA Draft.

It did not take long for Thompson to show that he was one of the league’s best shooters, as he made 41.4 percent of his triples during his rookie campaign and has never shot beneath 40 percent from downtown in any of his eight NBA seasons.

The Warriors went on to lose Game 6 and the finals without Thompson.

Thompson owns career averages of 19.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game while shooting 45.9 percent from the field and 41.9 percent from deep.
