Reports: Aaron Rodgers Wants Green Bay Opt-Out Clause

Green Bay Packers star quarterback Aaron Rodgers is reportedly looking to secure an opt-out clause before signing a new contract.

Aaron Rodgers is not expected to reject the extension, which would make him the highest paid quarterback in the NFL.

Reports say the player will sign before the end of the year, once his non-monetary demands are settled.

According to a report by NFL Network reporter Mike Garafolo, Aaron Rodgers has specifically asked for an opt-out clause.

“Another aspect I’m told is extremely important to him is player control,” Garafolo said on the NFL Network.  “How much control he can have on his future.”

An opt-out clause would mean that Rodgers would have the leverage in future negotiations with the Green Bay Packers.

The clause would allow him to either become a free agent or to join another franchise if he activated it.

However, Rodgers has played down talk of an opt-out clause.

“I don’t talk about it to the media and I don’t think my agent (does) either,” Rodgers told reporters Monday.  “A lot of it is just conjecture.”

At the moment, Rodgers is the tenth-best paid quarterback in the NFL. The Green Bay Packers likely have no issue with making him the highest paid. Although, an opt-out clause would be problematic for the team.

While Rodgers is the best quarterback in the league, the Packers still call the shots. He has two years left on his current deal after which Green Bay could slap the franchise tag on him. This would keep Rodgers in Green Bay for the next four years, until he is 38.
