Boston Celtics GM Danny Ainge regrets not making more moves last season

The Boston Celtics saw their 2018-19 season come to a disappointing close in the second round of the playoffs, which saw them fall well below contending for an NBA title.

It’s a campaign that general manager Danny Ainge has looked back at one that he felt that he should have made more moves to help the team’s championship chances, according to ESPN.

“I think that in hindsight, we should have cleaned out the roster a little bit to make it easier for [coach] Brad [Stevens], more joy for him to coach,” Ainge told ESPN’s Rachel Nichols in an interview that was released Tuesday.

The Boston Celtics had gone through much of last year riddled by injuries that put them in a tight spot to gather any sort of footing in the standings. That led to them falling to the fourth spot in the playoff positioning and ultimately falling to the Milwaukee Bucks in the second round.

There was much more than a roster shifting that needed to go for the Boston Celtics as it was clear that Irving had one foot out of the door as the season rolled along. That, combined with the internal issues that arose throughout the year, made it difficult for the team to push forward.

Boston did lose one of the top players in the league, but the team has pushed forward towards holding one of the best marks in the Eastern Conference this season. What these comments also signal is that Ainge won’t be afraid to make any in-season moves if he feels they are necessarily helping the franchise compete for an NBA title.
