Nets star Kyrie Irving does his part in helping WNBA players

One of the underlying stories around the world of sports has been how rough things have been for the WNBA. They haven’t had the same financial flexibility that the NBA has had due to the lack of revenue and coverage. It has seen many of their issues get sweep under the rug, but Brooklyn Nets star point guard Kyrie Irving has voiced that he’s donating $1.5 million to help the players sit out the 2020 season, according to the Associated Press.

Kyrie Irving is helping to make sure WNBA players can sit out the season and not stress about a paycheck.

The Brooklyn Nets star is committing $1.5 million to supplement the income of players who choose not to play this season, whether because of coronavirus concerns or social justice reasons.

The WNBA hasn’t exactly implemented a steady bubble setting for the players to operate. That has led to many players to voice their frustrations with the situation. Irving is stepping in to help those players navigate through this rough time. Players such as Natasha Cloud, who is sitting out the season, and Jewell Loyd are launching that funding for the players.

The WNBA has struggled to make things meet anywhere near the expectations that the players had with the situation. The top annual contract runs a little more than $200,00, which is far below the average NBA salary that is around $1 million for the veteran’s minimum. Many issues need to be hammered out for the WNBA, and Irving is doing his part to help out.
