NFL preseason Week 2 2021: 4 storylines to watch

We’re entering Week 2 of the 2021 NFL preseason, and it’s time to take a look at the storylines which will shape the coming days.

4. Mitchell Trubisky revenge game?

Alright, this is a bit of a stretch, but let’s have some fun. Trubisky is now backing up Josh Allen with the Buffalo Bills, and they take on the Chicago Bears come Saturday afternoon at Soldier Field. There’s a real chance we see Trubisky and Bears first-round pick Justin Fields on the field for large stretches of time, going against one another. For preseason football, that’s top-notch theatre.

3. Who pulls ahead for the Colts?

While it’s possible Carson Wentz is back on the field for Week 1 in Indianapolis, there’s also a good chance he remains sidelined with a foot injury. If the latter scenario is reality come Sept. 12, which of Jacob Eason or Sam Ehlinger is going to replace him? After one week of preseason, it doesn’t appear either has a real lead for the job. For head coach Frank Reich, he’ll likely want to have a decision after the Colts take on the Minnesota Vikings, allowing him to stop splitting up first-team reps in practice.

2. Same story, but in Denver

The other full-blown quarterback battle is with the Denver Broncos. This past week, both Teddy Bridgewater and Drew Lock looked good for Denver in a 33-6 win over Minnesota. Now, the duo heads to Seattle for a date with the Seahawks. While smart money says the job is Lock’s to lose — he’s younger, signed for longer and a draft pick of John Elway — the Broncos could change their minds if the third-year man struggles and Bridgewater torches a playoff-caliber opponent.

1. Another look at the first-round quarterbacks

We’ve seen all five first-round signal-callers now. This week, we get a second look. Does Justin Fields slide back some? Does Trevor Lawrence light it up against the New Orleans Saints on Monday Night Football? Will Zach Wilson help the New York Jets look the part of a sleeper when they battle with the Green Bay Packers? How about Trey Lance? Can he have a more consistent outing for the San Francisco 49ers (blocking would help)?

So on and so forth. It’ll be intriguing to see how the young guns look the second time around.
