Seahawks place QB Russell Wilson on injured reserve

The Seattle Seahawks have stumbled through the first five weeks of the season, holding a 2-3 record.

The Seahawks have been hit hard by the injury bug, with star quarterback Russell Wilson suffering a fractured middle finger on his throwing hand against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 5 action. According to Brady Henderson of ESPN, the Seahawks are placing Wilson on the injured reserve.

The Seattle Seahawks will place Russell Wilson on injured reserve as he continues to recover from finger surgery, coach Pete Carroll told reporters Friday.

It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, given that he underwent surgery to repair the injury. The initial timetable put him out of the mix for six to eight weeks, but recent reports suggest that he may return in four weeks.

The Seahawks will monitor the situation close he progresses along with his recovery. The placement on the injured reserve will sideline him for at least the next three weeks, forcing him to miss the next three games.

The earliest he can return to the field will be in Week 10 on the road against the Green Bay Packers. His absence ends his impressive streak of 149 straight regular-season starts, which is the longest current mark in the league.

With Wilson sidelined, the Seahawks will turn to backup Geno Smith as the starter. Smith performed well in relief against the Rams, showing a strong connection with star wide receiver D.K. Metcalf. The upcoming stretch of games without the star quarterback will dictate the Seahawks’ playoff chances.
