The Barclays: Kevin Chappell Breaks Course Record, Jumps 40 Spots on Saturday
Kevin Chappell had one heckuva a third round.
In the third round of The Barclays, Kevin Chappell stunned everyone—including Kevin Chappell—by shooting a record breaking 62 on Saturday. After which he said: “Here, in the wind, if you would’ve told me someone was going to shoot a 62 today, I would’ve laughed at them.”
Chappell started the day seemingly out of contention in 43rd place, however, he made up some ground going three under on the front nine. Three under on the back nine would have been impressive enough, but apparently he was aiming a lot higher than that.
Like course-record high.
Chappell tripled the ground he made up on the first nine by going going six under on the back. He finished the day at -9, which put him in third place at -12 when all was said in done. Chappell jumped an absolutely epic 40 places on the leader board, which is one stroke behind Matt Kuchar and Gary Woodland, who are tied in first at -13.
Tiger Woods isn’t out of it either. He went two under in the third round and is currently tied with David Lynn in fourth place at -8. Woods is still struggling with a lower back injury, which he said “starts off great every day, and then it progressively deteriorates as the day goes on.”
Added Woods: “Hopefully, tomorrow it will be one of those days again. Fight through it and see if I can win a tournament.”

Also still in contention are Jim Furyk, who came up two strokes short at the PGA Championship earlier this month, and Bubba Watson, who won the Masters in 2012. They are among the seven players tied in sixth plays at -7. Furyk jumped two places in the third round, while Watson advanced 15.
Other players of note who could still make a splash in the final round: American Rickie Fowler at -7, Australian Adam Scott and Irishman Rory McIlory, who will both start Sunday at -6.
