The Barclays: Adam Scott Wins, Tiger Woods in Second

Update: Adam Scott is the Last Man Standing 

The competition was fierce today at Liberty National, but in the end it was Australia’s Adam Scott who was the last man standing. His performance was up and down over four rounds, going two under, five under and one over in the first three rounds.

Whatever ground he lost on Saturday, he more than made up for on Sunday. Scott was -5 on the day, which puts him second only to Phil Mickelson in the final round. So far 2013 has been very good to Scott, who won the Masters back in April—the first Major of his career.

Tiger Woods finished in a four-way tie for second at -10. Things were looking very good for him early on, but a pair of ill-timed bogeys cost him on the back nine. Woods got back on track quickly, although it was clear that his back had become a problem by the end of the day.

Despite an impressive performance in the final round, Mickelson finished two strokes behind Scott at -9.

Close…but not close enough.

Mickelson Surges in the Final Round 

Once again Phil Mickelson has saved his finest golf for the final round. He started the day at three under, which put him in 34th place and almost out of contention entirely. He’d need to shoot close to the course record, as Kevin Chappell did on Saturday to have any shot at catching up.

And that’s exactly what Mickelson did. He finished up on Sunday with -6 in the round, -9 overall, and was one shot off the lead with one hole to go. He was one of the first to tee off today, so there’s still a lot of golf to be played. However, barring several major collapses, it’s very unlikely he’ll end up with the win. But he did jump ahead 30 spots—quite an accomplishment in and of itself.

Chappell and Matt Kuchar remain up front at -11, who have thus far gone even and -1 respectively. They each need to pick up their game though because Bubba Watson, Gary Woodland and Tiger Woods are all breathing down their necks at -10. Although Woodland’s game is looking increasingly shaky.

A lot of big names remain within striking distance at the moment. Woods is looking particularly strong through six holes, his lower back ailment obviously hasn’t been an issue so far.

Also making news at The Barclays today…

During the early final round action broadcast on the Golf Channel, American Rickie Fowler and Swede Jonas Blixt attracted an awful lot of attention from the boys in the booth, who were endlessly amused about their matching act.

Apparently what happened is last night Blixt found out they would be paired together today, so he went to Fowler—who is well known for his predominately orange wardrobe—and suggested they do the twins thing. Fowler wasn’t sure Blixt would go through with it, but he did lend him the clothes.

They haven’t received near as much attention since the broadcast switched over to CBS. However, you can bet the guys over at the Golf Channel are giggling about the “Orange Crush” at this very moment.
