Seahawks Trade WR Percy Harvin To Jets For Conditional Draft Pick
First reported by Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer later Friday afternoon, the Seattle Seahawks agreed to trade wide receiver Percy Harvin to the New York Jets in exchange for a conditional draft pick. The exact pick is not yet known, but ESPN’s John Clayton expects it to range from 2nd-4th round.
The deal will will be contingent on Harvin passing a physical. Though he’s played in all of the Seahawks games this season, Harvin has been struggling with injuries since 2012. Last season he missed all but one regular reason game before returning in the playoffs.
The move is very surprising, particularly on Seattle’s end. Harvin was supposed to become a central figure in the offense this year, with the playoff being adjusted in the offseason in order to properly utilize his explosive playmaking ability. Although there’s no question his production has been disappointing through five games.
Thinking through to next season, when the Seahawks might run into some cap issues once they finally have to start paying quarterback Russell Wilson quarterback money. In shipping Harvin off to the Jets, they’re also shipping out the $41.5 million he’s owed over the next four years.
The Jets, currently occupying the basement of the AFC East at 6-1, have been desperately in need of some help for second-year quarterback Geno Smith on offense. Their inability to convert in the red zone has already cost them several close games this season.
Harvin could be just what they need to get them over the hump.
