Chris Jones In Line For Major Chiefs Extension

The Kansas City Chiefs this offseason have set about solidifying their championship credentials, including securing the future of Chris Jones.

Defensive lineman Chris Jones (26) is entering his prime years and the Chiefs want him to spend them in Kansas.

They will ensure this by using the franchise tag. That is if a deal can be agreed with Chris Jones before the deadline.

Jones rose to prominence in 2018 with a 15.5 sack season. Despite an injury hit 2019, he still racked up 9 sacks and his versatility proved valuable for Kansas City.

General manager Brett Veach says that the franchise wants to retain Jones’ talent for the long term.

“I think the deadline to get a deal done is July 15,” said Veach.

“So, there’s a lot of time to continue the dialogue and to work on something with Chris, but we certainly are going to work to retain him, not just for next year, but for the future.”

“We’ve had a lot of discussions with Chris and the Katz brothers (his representation) and we continue to have that,” Veach said. “We’ve got a lot of time. Certainly, it’s a unique environment we’re working with and we were able to navigate the free agency period and retain some guys. We’re going to work through the draft and we’re going to continue dialogue, but we know how talented Chris is, I think the franchise tag speaks for it. We also have a lot of time.”

Meanwhile, the Covid-19 pandemic has begun to affect the NFL, with two players confirmed to have the virus this week.

Rams center Brian Allen is reported to have recovered well from the coronavirus, while the Broncos announced that pass rusher Von Miller had contracted the illness on Thursday.
