Cowboys NFC Best Against The Spread
Midway through the season, the Dallas Cowboys have rewarded bettors backing the team against the spread more times than any other team in the NFC.
The Cowboys have posted a 7-1-0 ATS record through the first eight weeks of the 2013 NFL season, a marker that sets the team out as not only the NFC’s best team against the spread, but also the NFL’s best team.
While Jerry Jones’ men have struggled on the field, compiling just a 4-4 record, the team is certainly worthy of your consideration on any given Sunday, at least when it comes to betting the spread.
At the other end of the spectrum, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have failed to cover the spread more times than any other team in the conference.
Betting the Spread: Teams Worth Backing
In addition to owning the NFC’s best record against the spread, the Cowboys also top the ATS standings at home (4-0-0), on the road (3-1-0), and when playing as an underdog (4-0-0). The team is no slouch when playing as the favorite either, having dialed up a 3-1-0 ATS record when preferred.
While America’s Team may be a chart-topper, it’s certainly not the only team worth backing against the spread. Other teams worthy of your attention include the San Francisco 49ers (6-2-0 ATS), Green Bay Packers (5-2-0 ATS), and New Orleans Saints (5-2-0 ATS).
All three of these teams – each of which would join Dallas, the Seattle Seahawks, and Detroit Lions in the postseason if the playoffs began today – have gotten the better of Vegas odds makers as they put up some of the conference’s best straight up records.
The Saints join the Cowboys with the best ATS record when playing at home (4-0-0 ATS), while the 49ers share the NFC’s best ATS record on the road (3-1-0 ATS), and are the conference’s best team when playing as a favorite (6-1-0 ATS).
Betting the Spread: Teams To Avoid
Tampa Bay’s miserable season on the field has been felt on the Vegas lines too. The winless Buccaneers have posted a 1-6-0 ATS record, the NFC’s worst record of its type and only marginally better – by way of one less game played – than the abysmal ATS record posted by the Jacksonville Jaguars (1-7-0 ATS).
Tampa Bay is by no means the only NFC side breaking bettors’ hearts this season. The Chicago Bears (1-5-1 ATS) have a push to thank for not being quire as bad as the Bucs, while the Atlanta Falcons, Minnesota Vikings, and Washington Redskins have all posted 2-5-0 ATS records.
The Bears (0-3-1 ATS) have posted the worst ATS record at home as well as the worst record when playing as a favorite (1-3-1 ATS), while the Buccaneers and Falcons share the worst record on the road (0-3-0 ATS).
Despite faring well against the spread in general, the New Orleans Saints have recorded a 1-2-0 ATS record when playing on the road, something worth keeping in mind when the team travels to MetLife Stadium to take on the New York Jets this weekend.
