Hype Begins For Mayweather vs. McGregor

There’s no doubt that Floyd Mayweather has earned his “Money” nickname. He reminded Conor McGregor of that Tuesday. The two fighter began a four-stop promotional tour to hype their Aug. 26 fight with a stop in Los Angeles.

McGregor has never earned more than $3 million for a fight. Mayweather was guaranteed $100 million to fight Manny Pacquiao in 2015.

“He look good for a seven-figure fighter,” Mayweather said. “I look good for a nine-figure fighter.”

‘Money’ admitted that his best days are behind him as a fighter.

“I’m an old man. I’m not the fighter I was 20 years ago,” he said. “But I got enough to beat you.”

McGregor played his part well.

“His little legs, his little core, his little head – I’m gonna knock him out inside four rounds, mark my words,” he told the crowd.

But he also made sure to remind fans that the fight is under boxing rules. Meaning he can’t use kicks, knees or the other tools of his trade.

The crowd was definitely pro-McGregor and tickets were given away. Mayweather’s manager said 11,000 people came to the press conference. But McGregor said it was closer to 20,000.

While the hype is fairly even, most don’t believe the fight will go the same way. Mayweather is a huge favorite. But the majority of bets coming in have been on McGregor. While that probably has more to do with personality, most causal bettors won’t lay -550.

McGregor was an Irish boxing champion as a youth. But that won’t do him much good now. While Mayweather hasn’t fought in nearly two years, it’s been longer than that since McGregor has boxed.

The fight is good entertainment. Nothing more, nothing less. It won’t be a classic boxing match. But it’s a testament to Mayweather that McGregor’s first boxing match will be one of the biggest of all-time.
