Jets QB Ryan Fitzpatrick To Undergo Surgery; Playing Status Uncertain
The New York Jets took to the road in Week 8 to face off against the up-and-coming Oakland Raiders at O.co Coliseum. Ryan Fitzpatrick and company were -3.5 favorites to beat the Raiders on their home field in the Bay Area, but Jack Del Rio’s squad proved to be too much to handle with the high-powered offense getting the best of the Jets’ stout defense.
Along with the defense struggling to keep up with Derek Carr and the Raiders offense, Fitzpatrick went down early in the game with a hand injury. The injury wasn’t thought to be serious at first with Fitzpatrick expected to get back in the game but was ruled out until backup Geno Smith also went down with an injury in the fourth quarter.
According to Dan Hanzus of NFL.com, Fitzpatrick will undergo surgery on his left thumb.
Todd Bowles told reporters on Monday that an MRI revealed that Fitzpatrick sustained ligament damage to his left thumb in Sunday’s 34-20 loss to the Oakland Raiders. Surgery will be needed to fix the issue, but Bowles said it’s possible Fitzpatrick could put off a procedure until after the season.
The Jets will be back at home in Week 9 to take on the visiting Jacksonville Jaguars at MetLife Stadium. The spread for this game has yet to be released with the uncertainty at the quarterback position.
Smith suffered a shoulder injury in the loss to the Raiders. Smith currently has a day-to-day status moving forward with no guarantee he’ll be ready for the Jaguars next weekend. The Jets will check out the free agent market for available quarterbacks with the team more than likely bringing in at least one player for some security at the quarterback position.
