Kelvin Benjamin to Sign With Chiefs After Being Cut by Bills

Kelvin Benjamin, who was cut earlier this week by the Buffalo Bills will sign with the Kansas City Chiefs said a source close to the team. The source said the deal for the wide receiver would be for one year. As a result, Benjamin can become a free agent during the offseason.

Kansas City recently released Kareem Hunt, its top offensive threat at running back. Although, it has another in Sammy Watkins but the wide receiver has been limited due to a sore foot. The Chiefs hope Benjamin can step in and fill the current void.

Kelvin Benjamin, who is 27, was released on Monday by Buffalo and on Wednesday cleared waivers. This season Benjamin has 23 receptions for 354 yards with one touchdown through 12 games.

The wide receiver’s best season was in 2014 while with the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers drafted Benjamin that same year during the first round. As a rookie in 2014 Benjamin had 73 receptions and nine touchdowns.

Benjamin sat out the entire 2015 season with a torn ACL. Since that time has not been the same player. Each season since returning in 2016 his production has dropped and last year he was traded to Buffalo by the Panthers.

Hunt was released last week by the Chiefs after a video surfaced that shows him kicking and shoving a woman.

Wide receiver Watkins has missed two of the last three games due to a sore foot, but this week practiced and was limited in the drills he performed.

Kansas City has used Demarcus Robinson and Chris Conley in games Watkins has missed. Benjamin would challenge both for playing time once he learns the team’s offense especially of Watkins continues to have problems with his foot.

Tyreek Hill leads the Chiefs in receptions with 66 for 1,119 yards and 11 touchdowns, but had just one reception last week in the Chiefs 40-33 win over the Raiders.
