Michael Bennett Retires To Pursue Racial Justice Cause

After eleven years, defensive end Michael Bennett has announced his retirement from the NFL.

The veteran announced his decision via Instagram on Tuesday. Michael Bennett bows out as a 2014 Super Bowl champion with the Seattle Seahawks, and three-time Pro-Bowler.

The 34 year old finished his career with the Dallas Cowboys last season, and has 69.5 career sacks. Michael Bennett told the New Yorker that he wants to help athletes use their platform to promote racial justice.

Bennett has represented the Bucs, Seahawks, Eagles, Patriots and the Cowboys. He has a total of 10 forced fumbles and 359 tackles.

“Retiring feels a little like death of self, but I’m looking forward to the rebirth — the opportunity to reimagine my purpose,” Bennett posted.

“I would like to thank my wife and children, who have sacrificed so much for me to succeed. I’m looking forward to supporting them the same way they have me these past 11 years. I have never been more at peace in my life.

“As the great Toni Morrison said: ‘Freeing yourself was one thing, claiming ownership of that freed self was another.’

Bennett will be remembered fondly in Seattle as a legend. He was a key member of their championship team, and went to the Pro Bowl in each of his last three Seahawks seasons.

Bennett is one of a number of athletes to prioritize politics over sport in recent times. The rejuvenated Black Lives Matter movement has opened the door for athletes to use their platforms to initiate change.

Many high-profile NBA players have opted out of the season’s restart because they feel like basketball is a distraction from more important issues. Bennett could well pave the way for NFL stars to start making the same choice.
