Karl-Anthony Towns’ Knicks Future Gets Complicated Before New Season
With training camp quickly approaching, New York Knicks star big man Karl-Anthony Towns remains without an extension.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania and Vincent Goodwill, the Knicks and Towns are at a standstill with contract talks that are unlikely to change before training camp starts next week.
The two sides have reportedly spent much of the offseason discussing a new deal, but it hasn’t moved toward anything substantial yet.
The All-Star big man is looking to cash in after helping guide the Knicks to their first NBA title in 53 years. He is currently eligible to receive a contract extension up to four years and $276 million, potentially a number that New York may not be willing to commit to on a lengthy extension.
Towns is scheduled to make $57 million this upcoming season and has a $61 million player option for the 2027-28 campaign. The current contract presents an opportunity for an extension to be reached at any point this season, but that could be delayed until next offseason

Since joining the Knicks, Towns has quickly become a key factor in the team’s sustained success. In the playoffs, he provided stable production, averaging 15.9 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 4.9 assists while shooting 55 percent from the floor.
New York views him as a key piece in helping the team stay in the championship window next to Jalen Brunson, OG Anunoby, Josh Hart, and Mikal Bridges. Time will tell what team owner James Dolan is willing to fork over to keep Towns beyond his current deal.
