Suns trade for big man Nick Richards in deal with Hornets
As the trade deadline inches closer in the next few weeks, the Phoenix Suns fortified their frontline by acquiring big man Nick Richards from the Charlotte Hornes and a second-round pick in exchange for forward Josh Okogie and three second-round selections.
The Suns are adding much-needed frontcourt help Richards, who is averaging 8.9 points and 7.5 rebounds while shooting 56.1 percent from the floor in 21 games. Phoenix has struggled to find stable play as the team ranks last in points from their starting center.
Richards could prove to be a pivotal starting piece as he’s upped his production in a starting role this season. In nine starts, he is averaging a double-double with 11.3 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks. He’s logged five double-doubles while he’s scored in double figures nine times.
He has been a steady factor as he’s shot 65 percent from the floor, which ranks fifth-best in the league over the last four seasons. The Suns will need Richards to step into a prominent role from the get-go as the team has moved in another direction away from veteran big man Jusuf Nurkic.

Phoenix is leaning on Mason Plumlee and Oso Ighodaro to handle the primary duties at center over the last few weeks. Richards’ large frame at 7 feet and 245 pounds gives them a potential prominent paint presence.
Richards is in the second year of his three-year, $15 million deal that runs through the 2025-26 season. The final year of his contract becomes fully guaranteed next offseason.
